What if your cravings aren’t about willpower?

By Mary Sheila Gonnella NC, BCHN

If you’ve ever found yourself standing in the kitchen at 9 o’clock at night wondering, “Why can’t I just stop eating?” – this week’s video is for you. (and if it’s an afternoon craving that gets the better of you, I’m talking to you too)

One of the biggest myths about weight loss is that cravings are simply a lack of willpower.

In my experience, that’s rarely the case.

Cravings are often your body’s way of communicating something. They may be influenced by low blood sugar, stress, fatigue, inadequate protein, disrupted sleep, or habits that have been repeated so often they feel automatic.

That’s why we’ve spent the last few weeks talking about circadian rhythms, insulin resistance, food awareness, and protein. All of these pieces work together to influence cravings.

In this week’s episode of the Midlife Metabolism Series, I explore why cravings happen and, more importantly, what you can do about them.

We’ll talk about:

• Why cravings often show up in the afternoon or late evening

• How habits create predictable craving patterns

• The connection between stress, blood sugar, and emotional eating

• One simple strategy that can interrupt the habit loop before you automatically reach for food

One of my favorite reminders is this:

Cravings are information, not a character flaw.

The more we understand what’s driving them, the more choices we have. And that’s where lasting change begins.
