Break the Grip of Sugar Cravings with My Simple Savory Recipe

Break the Grip of Sugar Cravings with My Simple Savory Recipe

I want to share one of my BEST TIPS for overcoming those pesky afternoons sugar cravings.

Do you ever have those days where you have good intentions and then suddenly BOOM, you eat the damn sugar?

Picture This

Apple vs Donut

You’re at work, and you walk into the break room for some tea. You notice a box of donuts on the table that someone brought to share. You stare at them but manage to resist, silently vowing then and there that you will not eat any.

You do well until the end of the day. But as you’re leaving you grab one or two and mindlessly eat them on the way home. You get home feeling unsatisfied by your sugary snack and frustrated by your impulse, and take another vow: that you won’t do it again tomorrow. (and pray the box is gone).

Based on my experience, this is likely a low blood sugar moment, or a low serotonin moment that can leave us feeling fatigued, anxious, irritable, and confused.

Here’s my tip to avoid the afternoon sugar splurge

The quick answer? If you want to avoid the afternoon sugar or chocolate splurge, be prepared with an afternoon Savory Protein and Fat Rich Snack.

Whether you are on the sidelines of a soccer game, driving around like a taxi all afternoon, or working 9-5, being prepared is key.

Many of my clients know that I don’t always promote snacks. I’m more of a breakfast, lunch & dinner girl–with some variations of course. But most of us have pretty long days and we get hungry between lunch and dinner. That’s when all bets are off.

There’s a remedy for this low blood sugar/low serotonin stretch in the afternoon that often increases our cravings for sugar (I will teach you why in my upcoming class). It’s having a savory snack at your fingertips. Then even if you do go for the sugary treat, you’ll have a little fat and protein in your system to buffer the negative effects of the sugar.

Here is my Ultimate Afternoon Savory Snack

Nuts and cheese

Feel free to vary your protein rich, high fat snack any way that sounds good to you, but I like to make this an umami moment.

Ingredients and supplies:

  • Small Tupperware and cooler bag for travel
  • 2-4 olives
  • 8 – 10 nuts
  • 1 oz sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 pickle – sliced rounds

Place all the ingredients onto a small plate or bowl, and enjoy a nibble of each to savor the flavor combination. What is your favorite savory afternoon snack? I’d love to hear about it!
